St. Lawrence Market: Baked Goods

Bread, what can I say except that it is the best complement to any meal. From breakfast, to lunch and dinner, bread is timeless, classic and irreplaceable. Tom Gumpel, Chef and former dean of the CIA (Culinary Institute of America), couldn’t have put it in better words:“Imagine the possibilities of what you can do with bread”, and I do!

On Saturday mornings, my fave thing to do is head to over to the gym and hit it hard, just so that I can drive over to St. Lawrence Market and start my weekend-eating routine with one of the best croissants I have had in Toronto. This one specifically comes from The Stonemill Bakehouse at the market.

Made fresh everyday at the market, this bakery sells hundreds of these buttery treats in one day. By 2pm they have almost run out of them. See why I have to go to the gym early on Saturdays?

So the question is not how good they are, but how many I eat? The answer is 2! I indulge in one plain croissant while I shop at the market, and on its cheesy version when I get home and make breakfast. They are so buttery, soft, fresh and almost decadent, that as much as I try, I can’t seem to ever resist.

The Stonemill’s assortment of baguettes, sweets and pastries are worth a try too. Though I seem to default to my usual croissant vice, I have entertained many dinners with French and Italian breads from this bakery, which are just as tasty, fresh and well-made as the croissants.

To get your own treats, head to the lower level (see map below) in the South Market. The Stonemill is open during regular market hours.
